Biography

The Honorable Dr. Yukio Hatoyama is a distinguished Japanese politician and academic who has served as Prime Minister, demonstrating significant leadership in Japan’s government and political reform. He possesses extensive experience in legislative affairs, party leadership, and international relations.

Dr. Hatoyama holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo and earned a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. Before entering politics, he served as an Assistant Professor at Senshu University, building a strong foundation in education and research.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hatoyama served as a Member of the House of Representatives from 1986 to 2012, beginning with the Liberal Democratic Party before becoming a leading advocate for reform. He co-founded the Democratic Party of Japan, where he held important positions such as President and Secretary-General, contributing to the party’s growth and influence.

In 2009, Dr. Hatoyama led his party to a historic electoral victory, becoming the 93rd Prime Minister of Japan. His administration focused on strengthening political leadership, enhancing administrative accountability, and promoting social welfare. He is also known for promoting yuai, fraternity and mutual respect, and for advancing regional dialogue and cooperation in East Asia.
